Are you part of the 8% that SUCCEEDS?



It is the month of January and the beginning of a New Year! A New Year always brings with it a new beginning, renewed energy, hope, joy and the mindset to achieve whatever we missed the year or years before. It is the time where most of us actively and excitedly set goals or take resolution for the coming year. However, before we know it, we settle into the usual saga all too soon. Statistics shows that only 16% of people think of goals or resolutions. Out of this 16%, 92% fail to achieve their goals by the end of the year. Can you believe that only 8% achieve their Goals? For example, out of 1000 people, only 160 people think of goals and only 12 achieve them- that is 12 out of 1000 people only succeed!!! Do goals help you to succeed? – Of course they do! Imagine in a football game, scoring without a goal post- that is the importance of having a goal. Similar to your performance appraisals, measures and metrics are determined and you evaluate yourself against them at the end of the year, in case you didn’t have them- what will you rate yourself out of? If we were to apply the statistics pertaining to goals to performance appraisal, only 8% will succeed and this is close to the upper percentile in a bell curve.


What do you need to do to be part of this 8% that succeeds? By researching and reading extensively on goal setting and reasons for failure, I have arrived at the top 5 things that need to be considered when setting goals with an intention to achieve them.


  1. 1. Taking on too much


Don’t let yourself get carried away with the list of things you would like to do for the entire year. When you list a number of things to be achieved, it is easy to get lost, spend your time and energy on a number of things, in turn not achieving much or none at all. It is advised to take up 5 strong goals for one year because each of these goals will have a number of tasks each to be accomplished. Moreover on achieving them, it will feel good when you look back at the end of the year. The more number of times you let go of a goal, you lose confidence and the interest to set a goal and achieve it.


  1. 2. A strong Reason- Why you want to do what you want to do?


Your purpose is the overall meaning and reasoning behind the way you live your life. Those who live with purpose understand that their time on Earth may be short but the positive difference that they make can last much longer. Your goals should, at least in some small way, help you to live your purpose. When we set goals for the wrong reasons and chase after things we don’t really need or desire; we aren’t driven to pursue them, commit to them or achieve them and end up wasting a great deal of time, energy and money that could have been spent pursuing things that resonate with us.


  1. 3. Planning & Reviewing


Setting a goal is only the beginning; the entire uphill task is planning, reviewing and achieving that goal. Unless there is a plan on how to go about achieving your goal, you are less likely to take action and the goal itself will fade away. It also gives you direction, allow you to better set your priorities as well as ensure that you stay on track in the pursuit of your goals. Once the plan is in place, the next important step is to review it as often as it demands. Review is the yardstick with which you can measure whether you are achieving your milestones or not. It is also gives you an opportunity to gauge whether the actions you have taken are giving you the desired results.


  1. 4.Commitment & Will Power


Now this is the key to the entire success story! Unless you are committed to doing what you have set your heart to, results will never occur. This requires a lot of will power, both go hand-in-hand. If your goal is to reduce weight, will power to avoid junk food and commitment to eating right and exercising will make all the difference. Despite a strong reason, irrespective of an elaborate plan, without commitment and will power you can kiss your goal a ‘goodbye’!


  1. 5.Visualisation


This is a very strong technique to achieve your goals. Every action happens twice, once in our mind and then in reality. Based on a survey conducted among small business owners who used a vision board or other visual representation when starting their business, 76% of them said that currently their business is where they envisioned it would be when they started it.


Another key technique is to make it obvious- share your goals with as many people as you can, or write it in place you constantly look into, or share it on social media and keep updating your progress. This way you would hold yourself accountable and will be compelled to accomplish it.
